Description

Harrison May was born in Croydon, England, but moved to New York City as a child with his father, a Dutch Reformed minister. He started out studying civil engineering, but soon decided to become a painter. In 1863, at the height of the American Civil War, he might have seen Lady Jane Gray as a symbol of sacrifice and martyrdom to the larger causes of the nation.
