Woodmere Art Museum, dedicated to the art and artists of Philadelphia, seeks a full-time Assistant Curator of School Programs to research, develop, and lead dynamic school programs that spark creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression through direct engagement with works of art. In this role, the Assistant Curator designs and delivers meaningful museum learning experiences for school-aged students across Smith Hall and Maguire Hall. This position reports to the Curator of Education and serves as their “right hand” in all manner of duties.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Sustain existing and develops new inquiry-based school programs and tours that will:
- Cultivate visual literacy, promote discussion, and integrate the visual arts across all academic disciplines
- Promote critical and creative thinking to foster student learning and growth, and enrich an appreciation of art
- Accommodate a diversity of learning styles
- Enrich exhibition experiences by developing educational materials for school programs such as self-guided children’s activities and art activity workbooks
- Evaluate educational programs, document outcomes for funders, and report findings to stakeholders
- Coordinate logistics, scheduling, communication, and materials for school programs working closely with docents and contracted art educators
- Support Education Department events and initiatives as needed
- Attend Education Committee meetings
Requirements
- Master’s degree in art education, museum studies, or related field preferred; an equivalent combination of professional museum education experience and teaching will be considered
- An understanding of learning and human development
- Basic knowledge of art history and art making
- Ability to develop educational programs from concept to lesson plans, to teaching and evaluation
- Work well independently and on a team
- Flexible schedule to work weekends as needed
- Experience as a museum educator preferred
