Oakley created this testimonial to express her appreciation of Thornton Oakley’s work on the memorial exhibition of illustrations and portraits by fellow Red Rose Girl Jessie Willcox Smith. The exhibition was held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in March 1936. Smith had died the previous May. Thornton Oakley was an artist and illustrator, who, like Violet Oakley, studied with Howard Pyle. The two artists were not related.
