[top right in graphite]: Agnes (Hewlett) Brown / Mary Nixon / Cyrus Wicker / Dr. Geo de Tarnowsky / models (col. Baby); [bottom right in graphite]: [illegibel calculations of time?]One of the models noted in Oakley’s inscription is Dr. George de Tarnowsky (1873-1942), a surgeon from Chicago, as well as Oakley’s cousin. He was likely the inspiration for the male figure at far left kneeling to work alongside a Red Cross medic. Tarnowsky served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Corp during World War I. For his leadership of the Red Cross Military Hospital No. 5 to treat the wounded evacuated to Paris, he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal.
