Piper, Jane

Jane Piper (1916 - 1991) took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and the Barnes Foundation, and studied privately with Arthur B. Carles in the 1930s. She taught painting at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and exhibited at Woodmere for the first time in 1968, when ten of her paintings were included in An Invited Group Exhibitions by Painters and Sculptors. She was a juror for the Museum’s 39th Annual Juried Exhibition in 1979.

Piper enjoyed a long career with exhibitions at PAFA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Allentown Art Museum, Lehigh University, Woodmere Art Museum, and Swarthmore College, among others. For many years, she was an influential teacher at the University of the Arts. She also taught at the New York Studio School and at PAFA, where she became an important mentor to Bill Scott, whose work is on view nearby. Her daughter, Jan Baltzell, also teaches at PAFA and her work also hangs in this gallery.
