[Untitled (Still Life)]

In Still Life Jane Piper uses the color white to set off and highlight the prismatic colors in the composition. This work was painted in her studio on Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia. Her studio faced south and provided a shifting light that Piper liked very much. She once said, "It's not a studied light for painting, but it's much more exciting light . . .”  The work of Arthur B. Carles, Paul Cezanne, and Henri Matisse were important influences throughout her long career.
