A hexagonal frame divides the buckle into six panels. Every other panel shows a small bird among scrolling leaves, with foliage alone in the others. The Victorian-revival bird-and-vine motif, adapted from earlier arabesque designs, covers the surface so fully that the buckle’s utility is nearly hidden, and the piece reads first as a small work of art before it reads as a fastener.
