Three houseboats enclose this painting, a solemn air drifting within the piece and through the solitary figures, an older women and a dog upon the largest vessel. Enlivening the work are the vivid hulls of the two central rowing boats and the slice of light that runs in between, stopping at the shadow of the quay, or unloading platform, in the background.
