Description

Italian Washer Women is a tour-de-force. Mitchell creates a complex illusion of volumes in motion, working in shallow relief. The three women carry large rectangular blocks on their backs, presumably baskets of laundry; they step forward as if ascending or descending a staircase. The cube-like baskets should be heavy, but the women are well in control as they partake of their journey.
