Pillar was created by Leon Sitarchuk who is most known for his metal sculptures and as a much-loved teacher. It is aptly titled Pillar as its metal shapes and configurations rise vertically in a column line form. The geometric forms convey power and strength as contrasting metal curves flow in and out. A sense of a figure is conveyed abstractly by the rise of the rectilinear forms that rise above the base structure. Perhaps its title Pillar references a reliable and essential person and support, such as the “pillar of the community.” Ten of Sitarchuk’s works can be found on the grounds of Montgomery County Community College’s sculpture garden.
