Known primarily a portraitist, Stoddard was commissioned to paint prominent Philadelphians throughout her long career. Here she depicts a young boy, David Gates, and the family dog, an image of innocence and casual ease. David wears the type of sailor outfit that became fashionable for young boys in the early decades of the twentieth century.
In 1948, Stoddard married fellow artist Joseph Pearson; both were dedicated volunteers at Woodmere.
