Description

Elizabeth Shippen Green met Violet Oakley and Jessie Willcox Smith in Howard Pyle’s illustration classes at Drexel Institute (now Drexel University). Like Oakley, she came from a family of artists. Her father, Jasper Green, was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) who worked as an illustrator and encouraged his daughter’s artistic aspirations.

Green shared a Mary Smith Prize with Oakley for best work by a woman in PAFA’s 1948 annual exhibition and, with Oakley and Smith, was among the first five women elected to the New York Society of Illustrators. Green and her husband, architect Huger Elliott, remained lifelong friends of Oakley and Edith Emerson.
