Description

Soft Thoughts is a quiet painting of subdued colors. The surface is worn as though time and nature have left their marks. Warm pink tones greet the viewer as patches of green and gray recede and find their place in the composition.

Mary Nomecos was born and raised in Millville, New Jersey. She studied painting at Barn Studio, run by artist Patricia B. Witt. While there she met painters Louis B. Sloan and Morris Blackburn, both instructors at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, who encouraged her to transfer to the Academy. She enrolled in the Academy and became an abstract painter, winning a Cresson Traveling Scholarship in 1974. After returning from her travels she worked for Locks Gallery and was the personal secretary for Robert Venturi. Her first solo exhibition was at Widener College in 1977. She was subsequently represented by Marian Locks Gallery and Jessica Berwind Gallery. Today she shows at Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia. She loves gardening but, when questioned whether it inspires her work, notes, "The paintings inform my garden more than the garden informs my painting.”
