The Glorious Still Life: Severin Roesen, Penelope Harris, and Charles Jay

January 26, 2019

June 2, 2019

Woodmere celebrates the tradition of still life with the acquisition of Severin Roesen’s Flowers and Fruit (1850). Roesen (1816–72), an immigrant from Germany, became the leading American still life painter of his time. We will exhibit his remarkable painting alongside the contemporary work of still life painters who also explore the opulence of nature, Penelope Harris and Charles Jay. Though working more than a century apart, these three artists seem to share a fascination with the expressive power of sensual nature.
