Mme. Neymanu, the delegate from Turkey to the League of Nations, was involved in a league action that would have a long-lasting impact: settlement in the dispute between the British and the Republic of Turkey over control of the province of Mosul in 1926. According to the British, who had been awarded governmental control over Iraq in 1920, Mosul belonged to Iraq; Turkey claimed that Mosul was part of its historic Ottoman heartland. Turkey reluctantly submitted to the league’s arbitrated decision that Mosul would remain part of British Mandate Iraq for twenty-five years. The league’s rationale was that the British would be better equipped to protect the rights of the province’s ethnic Kurds.
