R. Marriner came to New York in 1924 to continue his piano studies and for the next six years performed recitals in the United States and Europe. Beginning in the mid-1930s, he served as music director at the Franklin Institute and lectured in music at the University of Pennsylvania. During WWII, Lieutenant Marriner oversaw the music therapy programs in the military hospitals and hospital ships.
