Description

[upper right in graphite]: Hershl [sic] Gorodetzky; [verso in graphite]: Orchestra financed by a Mrs. Bok / Camden Maine / while visiting a Mrs. / GreenBorn in Philadelphia in 1927, Herschel Gorodetzky (d. 2010) began playing the cello at age 8. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, and two years prior to graduating became a cellist for the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1948. He later joined the Reading Symphony Orchestra, leaving it in 1956 to pursue a career in business, which is when he likely changed his name to Herschel Gordon. This study likely is part of a possible series of drawings documenting "Mrs. Bok's orchestra, Camden, Maine."
