Gu, Deena
Description
Born in Shanghai, Gu developed her confident draftsmanship and calligraphic sensibility during years of apprenticeship with one of China’s modern masters, Cheng Shifa, and she upholds an artistic lineage that reaches back many generations. In 1983, after moving to the United States, Gu enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), where she earned a certificate in painting. Her work is informed by two spheres of artistic training: the gestural calligraphy of Chinese art and the classical program of study at PAFA. In 2014, Woodmere had an exhibition of Gu’s work, Journey in Watercolor: The Art of Deena Gu.
