Gu works in watercolor on silk or pulp paper, creating abstract landscapes with washes of color that alternate between delicacy and intensity. Sky, land, and water seem to dissolve into a “dream view.” Atmosphere and scale give the illusion of three-dimensional space. The large tree on the right appears closer to the viewer than the vegetation and trees on the left, as much due to size as to the saturated colors and linear detail.
