Schell, Susan Gertrude
Description
Born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Susan Gertrude Schell was well known for her sea and landscapes. Schell grew up in the Germantown area, not that far from fellow Philadelphia 10 artist, Nancy Maybin Ferguson and attended the West Chester State Teachers College. She also attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, where she would one day come back teach for thirty years, and continued her education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, Schell took part in a progressive group of women painters and sculptors known as the Philadelphia Ten from 1934 to 1945.
