Apollo belongs to a series devoted to Greek gods and demigods, and distills the divine figure into rounded contours that evoke musculature and motion while maintaining an elemental calm. Light plays across its curving surfaces, revealing subtle shifts between surface and shadow; the result is a work that feels simultaneously monumental and intimate.
Martino is a Philadelphia native who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) summer program in Chester County. She is best known for her hand-carved biomorphic sculptures that probe the intersections of form and the tactile qualities of wood. One of these sculptures, Apollo, is on view in Maguire Hall's Heckman Ashenfelter Gallery.
