Horter’s drawing of Rouen Cathedral is a nod to Monet who created a number of paintings of the Church. In his more modernist, Cubist-inspired version, atmosphere is created by overlapping angular geometries, hard edges, and charcoal shadings. There is a subtle tension between order and disorder, with strong diagonals and occasional curves challenging the predominance of vertical lines.
