Mussolini: Hitler: "Let her bleed a little more”

In this lithograph, Biddle addresses the rise of fascism in Europe and the violent overthrow of the Spanish Republic. Spain is represented by the figure of a woman who lies bleeding, knives plunged into her heart. The giant rats in the foreground are Hitler and Mussolini.

This print appeared on the final page of Biddle’s 1939 autobiography An American Artist’s Story. He concluded the book by stating: “The future will not judge our generation and civilization solely by the wrecks, the lies, the cruelty, which they have perpetrated. It will understand them too by the protest of our artists.”
