Meunier finds inspiration in the animals and plants that he encounters in his far-ranging travels. To convey their often unfamiliar beauty, he constructs whimsical and usually monochromatic totems from wood and found objects. The uncanny creatures—such as this looming squid—assert personalities as distinct as portraits of human beings.
Meunier received a BFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an MFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture. He has been a professor of art at Swarthmore College since 1979, serving as chair of the Art Department from 2001 to 2006. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, in addition to several faculty grants from Swarthmore College. Meunier is also the author of two children’s books: Pipiolo and the Roof Dogs (2003) and Bravo, Tavo! (2007).
