Description

This landscape depicts a rocky shoreline and ocean. Boulders jut out on either side of swelling waves with a luminous sky overhead. Cool tones throughout the work evoke a sense of tranquility. Maine was one of the locations Mary Butler favored in her travels, Monhegan Island being a site that artists in the nineteenth century, such as Constance Cochrane were drawn to. It also boasted an art colony which included the likes of  Robert Henri, George Bellows and Edward Hopper. A substantial artist community exists there today.
