Description

An early acquisition by Woodmere's founder Charles Knox Smith, this sculpture by Joseph Alexis Bailly is indicative of Smith’s ambition to amass a collection of work by the greatest artists of his time. The Flute Player is identified by the shepherd-pipe he holds in his hands. He is perhaps Pan, the god of the forest, flocks, and shepherds who was known for playing exquisite melodies on his pipes.
