An early acquisition by Woodmere's founder Charles Knox Smith, this sculpture by Joseph Alexis Bailly is indicative of Smith’s ambition to amass a collection of work by the greatest artists of his time. Echo, the wood nymph, was an attendant to Juno, the queen of the Roman gods. Her gesture foretells her fate: condemned by Juno to live without the ability to speak, Echo can only repeat the utterances of others.
