[lower right of drawing in red ink]: stamped signature / stamped monogram initials; [verso in black ink]: James McLure[sic] Hamilton, artist / (Pres. Of Fellowship P.A.F.A.) / V.O.Born in Philadelphia, John McClure Hamilton studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. He continued his studies in Paris and Brussels. Hamilton settled in England, becoming official portrait painter to Prime Minister Gladstone.
