[lower right in red ink]: stamped signature / stamped monogram initials; [bottom left in graphite]: John McClure Hamilton 1917 artistBorn in Philadelphia, John McClure Hamilton studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. He continued his studies in Paris and Brussels. Hamilton settled in England, becoming official portrait painter to Prime Minister Gladstone.
