Two women stop to chat at the corner of 24th Street and Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia. Dox Thrash rendered this peaceful scene in subtle shades of gray. The artist is known for recording the grim social realities of his time, but here the relaxed atmosphere of busy city life is reassuring. In the late 1930s, Thrash produced an etching of the same subject and location from a different angle.
This drawing was purchased by the Museum at auction from the collection of Oprah Winfrey.
