Day’s watercolors and drawings of the 1990s stand as culminating works of his career. A diverse range of contemporary, historical, mythological, and invented characters occupy imagined settings in which the past and present are juxtaposed. Ancient figurative sculptures come to life and there is often a central event or object that attracts the attention of the assembled company.
A violinist is the subject of attention in (Factory). Seated amidst the ruins of a civilization, he immerses himself in his playing, seeming to take refuge in his craft. All figures turn toward him, except for the strange female figure at center with three animal heads. She looks to the right, to the left, and forward, serving as the bizarre fulcrum of this strange drama.
