Day’s watercolors and drawings of the 1990s stand as culminating works of his career. A diverse range of contemporary, historical, mythological, and invented characters occupy imagined settings in which the past and present are juxtaposed. Ancient figurative sculptures come to life and there is often a central event or object that attracts the attention of the assembled company.

A village square is the site of (Party). A small child in blue contemplates a fantastical dollhouse topped with a propeller. A football helmet, a stuffed bunny, and other toys are strewn about; these objects of play and curiosity nurture a child's imagination, just as works of art nurture imagination and create meaning throughout a person’s life.
