Description

Julius Bloch was an instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts during World War II. A veteran of World War I himself, Bloch harbored great anxieties about the United States’ entrance into another international conflict. During the opening years of the war, Bloch produced many self-portraits in which his face shows despair and uneasiness.
