Lachman was celebrated for the strength of her draftsmanship in figurative work and the sensuous beauty of her abstractions. September, a fully abstract painting, is constructed entirely through color. Using a palette knife, she built up layers of textured pigment to create a dynamic composition where bursts of aqua blue collide with deep, autumnal tones, evoking the seasonal transition from summer into fall.
Lachman studied at Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art and Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was one of the most active members of the abstract artist collective known as Group ’55 and the later Philadelphia Abstract Artists group, exhibiting in more of their shows than any other artist. Lachman was also a longtime teacher at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford and at the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial.
