Shag Rock is a typical example of Folinsbee’s skill in rendering the many moods of the sea. Tossing waves beat against a lone rock off the coast of Maine, where a group of cormorants, otherwise known as “shags” for their crested head, cluster under a shaft of light from a stormy sky. A small daub of red paint blobs in the waves to the left of the work, though it is unclear what is depicts.
