Description

This piece by Christopher Smith is a section of a larger work depicting a reclining nude. It is part of a series sculpted around 2000-2003 in which Smith sought to convey the model’s relationship with the plinth, or the slab that they lay upon. In viewing this section, or fragment of the body, our attention is turned to the detail and complexities of the body’s torso without the larger expressive narrative of the full figure. Smith likened the shape and curve of the torso to the imagery of an overflowing cornucopia of fruit. Another of Smith's figural sculpture stands outside Woodmere’s entrance.
