A time-honored subject for artists, the three graces, or charities, were Greek goddesses of nature: Euphrosyne, Thalia, and Aglaia. Representative of female beauty and creativity, the graces are typically depicted as a harmonious nude trio.
Biddle’s take on the three graces defies classical beauty and harmony. His figures stand with slouching postures and pelvises thrust out. The woman on the left bears a distraught expression and holds her hand to her mouth. The figure on the right looks down in boredom or irritation. The artist’s use of repetitive, scratchy lines accentuates the raw and confrontational nature of the print.
