Wedding Breakfast

In 1928, George Biddle stayed with politically active painter Diego Rivera in Mexico. While there, he observed Mexican mural painting firsthand and was inspired to bring the art form to the United States.

Painted the year he traveled to Mexico, Wedding Breakfast depicts a Mexican family silently gathered around the table. A woman points to a small chicken on the table, while another figure drinks from her cup. In the foreground, a woman raises her hands in prayer, while a kneeling figure gestures to a bowl of fruit on the ground.
