Description
Doris Staffel was a founding member of Group ’55 and a participant in several forums; she joined the Philadelphia Abstract Artists and exhibited with them from 1957 through 1962.
Staffel graduated from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, earned a master’s degree at the University of Iowa under Philip Guston, and attended Hans Hofmann’s classes in New York. She taught at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) from 1968 to 1990.
Staffel exhibited in solo and group shows continually for sixty years, including a 2012 retrospective at Woodmere Art Museum. Her work is in the collections of the Asheville Art Museum, North Carolina; Bryn Mawr College; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; New Jersey State Museum; Philadelphia Museum of Art; State Museum of Pennsylvania; and Woodmere.
