Abstract Figuration

Abstract Figuration is exuberant in its color and sensuous in its application of paint, blending multiple figures with forms of nature. Fifteen of Staffel's figure paintings on paper (including this one) and ten charcoal drawings of figures were included in Staffel's eleventh solo exhibition, which took place in May 1993 at the Jessica Berwind Gallery in Philadelphia. Although her work had been part of numerous group exhibitions around that time, this was Staffel's first solo show in eight years.

Abstract Figuration was a gift from Staffel to Woodmere in 1995, on the occasion of the Museum's memorial exhibition of work by her friend Jane Piper. Several of Piper's colleagues and friends donated their work to the Museum at that time.
