Autumn Landscape: Gwynedd

This landscape depicts the driveway to a 1690s Gwynedd Valley stone farmhouse, where Betty Hubbard lived from 1925 to 1930. Born in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Hubbard studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1921 to 1925, along with Faye Swengel Badura, Quita Brodhead, and Jean Knox Chambers. She attended Arthur B. Carles's Saturday Morning Costume Sketch Class and, when Carles was fired in 1925, withdrew from the Academy in protest and studied with him privately. Like many painters in Carles's circle, Hubbard was a brilliant colorist. After marrying husband Richard, Hubbard moved to New York City and spent summers in East Harwich on Cape Cod. She enjoyed numerous friendships with other artists and critics, but rarely exhibited and, surprisingly, never had a solo exhibition.
