This painting demonstrates the artist’s refined sensitivity to composition, proportion, and color. Strong lines define the contours of the figure’s powerful yet graceful form. Warm tonal hues of crimson, offset by passages of orange and green, convey a natural ease, while non-naturalistic color and an abstracted pictorial space draw on the methods of Hubbard’s most formative teacher, Arthur B. Carles. 

Born in Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood, Hubbard studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) from 1921 to 1925 alongside Quita Brodhead, and attended Arthur B. Carles’s Saturday morning costume sketch class. In solidarity with him, she left PAFA after his dismissal, continuing her studies with him privately. Hubbard remained one of Carles’s most steadfast supporters, and he in turn championed her talent, often displaying her work in his studio and admiring her exceptional sense of color.
