The harsh realities of life in poverty are evident in this lithograph. A group of children sit together, perhaps engrossed in a game. Behind them a baby sleeps in a carriage. A sign leaning against the wall reads, in reverse, “wood for sale.” With the title of the piece in mind, the viewer realizes that the inattentive children are too young to be taking care of the infant. The drab interior, child babysitters, and sign indicate that this is a poor, perhaps even destitute, household.
