Among the earliest of Day’s figurative drawings is the Bridge Game series. Here the artist establishes his fascination with social ritual and the relationships between individuals within a group as structured by the rules of a game. The elements at play include the players, the context of the architectural space, and the degree to which line and shading foreground different dimensions of the subject. Day was interested in gaming as a metaphor for life. Similarly, Day’s bridge game and other gaming imagery are metaphors for social structures and relationships.
