This work takes its name from FeO, the chemical formula for ferrous oxide, a compound that accounts for 9 percent of Earth’s crust. Bramblett mixed “raw” ferrous oxide powder with acrylic medium to make the paint for this work, but the substance is also a common ingredient in commercial paint, makeup, and tattoo ink.
